Shedd Aquarium

29 01 2013

When was the last time you have been to the aquarium; a class trip, Chicago vacation, time with the nieces, nephews, or grandkids? I know for a fact, the last time I went to the Shedd Aquarium was in the 5th grade. Without divulging my age, let’s just say it was a few years ago!

About a month ago, I visited the Shedd Aquarium for pleasure and so glad I took the time out of my day for a short adventure. It was a Thursday afternoon in December, while the kids were off school, and it was a buzzing place. However, the line moved quickly to get my tickets and the staff was extremely patient and courteous.

I love wandering museums and spending as much time in one area or another as I see fit. My first stop was at a huge fish tank of tropical fish, called the Caribbean Reef. The fish are absolutely beautiful and memorizing. Periodically, a staff member dives into the tank to feed the fish and play with them. When I was there observing, one staff member was actually on an on-air interview, while snorkeling. It was very education and entertaining.

I then made my way to the Abbott Oceanarium, downstairs. I was able to see the newest addition to the Shedd Aquarium, the baby beluga. It was wonderful to view the interaction between the baby and family in their large home. Also, surprising, the baby beluga didn’t look quite like a “baby”. He was huge!
My favorite exhibit was the famous Jellies! My original guess was that the exhibit was going to be just one fish tank full of large Jellies. However, my guess couldn’t be more inaccurate. The exhibit almost reminded me of going to a fish store, with many individual fish tanks. In each tank, there were thousands of different breeds of jellies, along with a description. Not only were they fascinating to watch but beautiful, as they glided through the water.

I had a wonderful experience at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago and would highly recommend going alone or with young kids. The Fairfield Inn & Suites Chicago Downtown, does offer a Shedd Aquarium Package, called “Sleeping with the Fishes”. The package includes valet parking, deluxe continental breakfast, wi-fi Internet, 2 VIP tickets, and a special surprise for the kids. It is a great weekend get-a-way in Chicago.
