Heaven on Seven

2 09 2012

Have you ever craved a little southern Louisiana style cooking in Chicago? I am sure you asked yourself, were am I supposed to satisfy my craving when Chicago is known for deep dish pizza, hot dogs, and every other All-American food group? Heaven on Seven, located downtown Chicago, in Streeterville, should be on the top of your list if you need some spicy jambalaya or Cajun seafood. It is located in a discrete location in the same building where AMC movie theater is held, one block from Michigan Avenue on Rush Street. However, after you take the elevator up a flight, you are whisked away by the Cajun spices and welcome by a large Mardi Gras Mask dangling above the door to greet you. While you are being seated, you are transported to a city miles away full of color, high energy, and glorious aromas. The restaurant is quite large considering the hidden location. There is a good size bar and seating area upon entering the restaurant and on the other side is a huge wall, stocked from top to bottom of hot sauce bottles. If I had to guess, I would estimate over 1,000 bottles are displayed. I was taken to the back of the restaurant to enjoy my meal around 12pm during the work week. My seating location was covered  in colorful Mardi Gras Beads, masks, and jesters. I also was surprised to see that the restaurant was absolutely packed! However, the service was impeccable.

My server was delightful. She knew the menu backwards and forwards and gave great recommendations. I ordered the orzo jambalaya with shrimp and a salad, which was a daily special. The salad was loaded with fresh vegetables and a flavorful vinaigrette dressing. The orzo jambalaya was full of texture, spices, and was a huge portion. I was only able to eat half of it and took the remaining home. As I had mentioned previously, the restaurant was extremely busy for lunch, however, the service was so efficient, I left the restaurant full, content, and in under an hour. I highly recommend visiting Heaven on Seven for lunch or dinner to escape from All-American Chicago food for an hour and experience a little Louisiana cooking in the city. You will be pleasantly surprised and have a wonderful experience.
